“All violence, all that is dreary and repels, is not power, but the absence of power.” -Ralph Waldo Emerson
The experience of domestic violence is chillingly common among women; one in four women will have experienced domestic abuse in their lifetime, according to www.ncadv.org.
The consequences of this experience are incredibly profound and far-reaching; they include affects such as despair, helplessness, dependency, fear, denial, and shame, as well as effects, including the loss of self-esteem, friends, and other sources of dependency, in addition to the physical manifestations of abuse.
Set in the small town of Riverview, Florida in 1997, this assemblage expresses the experience of a sixteen-year-old boy who witnesses his younger cousin suffer abuse at the hands of her boyfriend. Subsequently, the boy must attempt to overcome his internal struggles and lack of agency in order to report the incident and seek help for his cousin.
This project is dedicated to Gavin, the real Scott, although he doesn’t know it.
